7 Critical Steps to Dewinterize Your RV Without Mistakes

The first time we tried to dewinterize our RV in early March 2019, we thought we had done everything right. We followed the winterization process in reverse, filled the fresh tank, opened a few faucets, and called it good. Three days later, parked at a campground in North Carolina, we noticed a puddle forming under the rig. The water pump housing had a hairline crack running straight through the plastic screen. That crack taught us more about the proper dewinterize rv process than any manual ever did, and now we make sure to inspect every component carefully before hitting the road.

Why We Wait Until April (And Why You Shouldn’t Copy Us)

We are based in Florida, so our definition of “spring” is wildly different from someone stored in Montana or Michigan. We made the mistake of thinking that because it hit 70 degrees in late February, we were clear to bring water back into the system. That works fine until a cold snap rolls through at 2 AM and drops temps into the mid-20s.

The rule we follow now is not about calendar dates. It is about consistent overnight lows. We wait until nighttime temperatures stay above freezing for at least five consecutive nights. Not the forecast, but actual recorded lows. According to the National Weather Service, freeze warnings are issued when temperatures are expected to fall below 32°F, and we take those seriously when planning our dewinterization timing.

If you store your rig somewhere cold, your timeline is completely different. We have talked to RVers in the upper Midwest who do not even think about dewinterizing until late April or early May. They are dealing with ground frost, frozen water hookups at campgrounds, and the real possibility that a late-season snowstorm could dump six inches in mid-April.

The other thing nobody tells you is that once you fill the fresh water tank and run water through the RV systems, the winterization is reversed. Your rig is no longer winterized. If temperatures drop below freezing after that point, you are gambling with every pipe and fitting in the system.

So here is what we actually do now. We wait until the long-range forecast shows consistent highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s. We dewinterize on a day when we know we will be using the RV within the next week, not months in advance. And if we are storing the rig between trips and there is any chance of a freeze, we drain everything again and pump a gallon of antifreeze back through the lines.

How to Dewinterize RV Water Systems Without Panic

The first thing we do is pull out the water heater bypass valves and make sure they are back in the normal flow position. This is the step we forgot in 2020, and we spent twenty minutes wondering why no hot water was coming out of the faucet.

Then we check every low-point drain. These are the plastic caps or valves on the underside of the RV that let you drain the fresh and waste lines. We have replaced ours with ball valves using a PEX cinch tool, which took about ten minutes and made the whole process easier.

Next, we fill the fresh water tank about halfway. We turn on the water pump and listen for it to kick on. If it sounds like it is struggling or cycling on and off rapidly, that usually means there is air in the line or a fitting that did not seal properly after winter.

We start opening faucets one at a time, beginning with the cold side of the kitchen sink. The water that comes out first is going to be pink or orange, depending on what kind of antifreeze was used. We let it run until the water is clear, then move to the hot side. Then we move to the bathroom sink, the shower, the outside shower if we have one, and finally the toilet.

The toilet is where people forget to flush antifreeze out of the bowl and the valve. We hold the pedal down for a solid fifteen seconds after the water runs clear, to make sure everything in the valve assembly is flushed.

While the faucets are running, we pull the aerator screens off the faucet heads and the showerhead. Antifreeze can leave a residue that clogs those tiny screens, and if you leave them on, you will get weak water pressure and think something is wrong with the pump.

The one tool we swear by for this whole process is a cheap hand pump that connects directly to the city water inlet. It cost about five dollars and lets us pull antifreeze through the city water line without having to rig up some complicated workaround. We connect it to the inlet, stick the hose in a jug of antifreeze, and pump until pink water comes out. Then we reverse the process with fresh water until it runs clear.

Success feels like turning on a faucet and getting strong, clear, odorless water with no sputtering or air pockets. It feels like knowing that when we pull into a campground later that week, we are not going to spend the first night troubleshooting leaks or dealing with the taste of antifreeze in our coffee.

The Hot Water Heater Resurrection Nobody Talks About

Most people skip the water heater entirely when they dewinterize an RV, and they regret it by July when the thing stops heating or starts making weird noises. Over the winter, sediment settles at the bottom of the tank, and if the heater was not bypassed properly during winterization, there could be antifreeze sitting in there turning into sludge.

Our rig has a conventional six-gallon tank. If we had not bypassed it during winterization, it would have guzzled six gallons of antifreeze to fill the tank, and getting that taste out in the spring would have taken a dozen fill-and-drain cycles.

Here is what we actually do. We make sure the tank is empty by opening the drain plug on the outside of the RV. If the heater was bypassed, only a little bit of water will come out. Either way, let it drain completely. Then we close the drain plug, open the pressure relief valve on top of the heater, and turn on a hot water faucet inside the RV. This lets air escape while the tank refills. If you skip this step and turn the heater on, you will hear a horrible banging sound as air pockets get forced through the lines.

Once the tank is full and water is flowing steadily out of the hot faucet, we close everything up and turn the heater on. We wait about twenty minutes, then check for leaks around the drain plug and the pressure relief valve. Those are the two spots that tend to develop slow drips after sitting all winter.

Our Pre-Trip Checklist That Isn’t Actually a Checklist

The day before we leave on our first trip of the season, we walk around the RV and test everything that involves water, power, or propane. This is not a formal checklist. It is more like a paranoia-fueled tour of every system that could fail on the road.

We start with the water system. We turn on every faucet again, even though we already flushed them during the dewinterize rv process. We are looking for drips, weak pressure, or any sign that a fitting loosened up over the winter. We flush the toilet a few times and check underneath for leaks around the valve. We fill the fresh tank all the way and let the pump run for a few minutes to make sure it is not cycling constantly.

Then we move to the water heater. We turn it on, wait for it to heat up, and run hot water at every fixture. We are checking for consistent temperature and making sure the heater is not making any rattling or hissing sounds.

Next is the propane system. We turn on the stove, the furnace, and the water heater in propane mode if it has one. We are listening for the click of the igniter and watching to make sure the flame lights quickly. We also check the propane detector inside the RV to make sure it is still working.

Electrical is last. We plug into shore power and turn on the air conditioner, the microwave, and anything else that draws significant power. We are making sure the breaker does not trip and that everything runs smoothly. We also check the battery voltage with a digital multimeter.

The thing we almost missed one year was the outside shower. We had flushed all the inside fixtures but completely forgot about the exterior shower head. When we finally turned it on, the handle was cracked and water sprayed everywhere except where it was supposed to go.

Should You Pay Someone or Dewinterize RV Yourself?

We have done it both ways. The first year we owned our rig, we paid a dealer in Ocala to handle the whole dewinterization process. They charged us based on book time, which meant even though the actual work took maybe an hour, we got billed for two and a half hours at $110 per hour. The total came to under $300.

The next year we did it ourselves. It took us about two hours the first time, mostly because we were being overly cautious and double-checking everything. By the third year, we had it down to under an hour. The only cost was a couple gallons of fresh water and maybe a replacement aerator screen or two.

We get that doing it yourself is not for everyone, though. If you are not comfortable working with your RV’s plumbing, or if you do not have the time to spend a couple hours troubleshooting, paying someone makes sense. The risk of doing it wrong and causing a leak or damaging a component is real. We have learned a lot about RV maintenance and systems over the years, and that knowledge makes us more confident tackling these jobs ourselves.

There is also the question of what kind of RV you have. If you have a simple travel trailer with a basic water system, doing it yourself is pretty straightforward. If you have a high-end fifth wheel with a tankless water heater, a residential fridge with an ice maker, and a washer-dryer combo, the complexity goes up.

So here is the question you need to ask yourself. Do you have the time, the tools, and the patience to spend a couple hours working through the dewinterize rv process? Or would you rather pay someone $120 to $300 and know it is done right? There is no wrong answer. We chose DIY because we like knowing exactly what was done and how.

The Morning We Almost Left Without Checking One Last Thing

We were hitched up, ready to pull out of the driveway for our first trip of the 2022 season, when one of us remembered we had not checked the city water inlet. We had flushed it during dewinterization, but we had not actually tested it under pressure. We unhooked, connected a hose to the inlet, turned on the water, and immediately saw a slow drip coming from the check valve inside the inlet.

We replaced the check valve that afternoon. It cost about eight dollars and took ten minutes. If we had discovered that leak at the campground, we would have either had to drive to a parts store, hope they had the right valve in stock, and fix it in a campground parking lot, or we would have had to skip using city water for the entire trip and rely on the fresh tank.

That is the thing about learning how to dewinterize rv systems properly. You can follow every step, flush every line, and test every system, and there will still be something you almost miss. The difference between a smooth start to the season and a frustrating one is whether you catch that thing in your driveway or on the road. We have been RVing since 2018, and we still walk around the rig one more time before we leave, to make sure we did not forget something obvious.
