7 Critical Mistakes We Made First Time Boondocking

We pulled into our first boondocking spot outside Hungry Horse Reservoir in Montana with the kind of confidence that only comes from complete ignorance. It was peak summer, pushing into the high 90s, and we had found what looked like the perfect site on a free camping app. The photo showed tall pines, a level clearing, and absolutely zero other rigs nearby. We thought we had won the lottery. Looking back, our first time boondocking taught us that preparation matters more than luck when you’re heading off-grid.

By hour six, we were running a screaming generator to keep the AC going, which defeated the entire point of finding a quiet spot in the woods. By day two, the fresh water tank was bone dry and we were rationing what was left in our coffee mugs. By day three, we gave up entirely, took cold showers to survive one miserable night of sleep, and drove straight to the nearest RV park with full hookups.

That trip taught us more about off-grid RVing than any blog post or YouTube video ever could. We made every rookie mistake in the book, and a few that probably are not even in the book yet. Here are the seven biggest mistakes from our first time boondocking, exactly as they happened, so you can skip the part where you stand in 95-degree heat wondering why your batteries are dead and your fridge smells like spoiled milk.

We Showed Up Completely Unprepared (And Thought That Was Fine)

The night before we left, one of us asked if we should maybe test the solar panels or check the battery levels. The other one said, “It’ll be fine, everything worked at the last campground.” That sentence right there should be engraved on a plaque as the official motto of beginner boondocking disasters.

We assumed that because our rig had solar panels on the roof and two house batteries, we were set for power. We assumed that because we had stayed at state parks before and used the shower sparingly, we understood water conservation. We assumed that because we had downloaded an app with free camping locations, we knew how to pick a good spot.

Every single one of those assumptions was wrong.

The solar panels were there, sure. But we had no idea how much power they actually generated versus how much our fridge, water pump, and lights were pulling. The batteries were original to the rig, which we bought used, and they were already half-dead before we even arrived. The app showed us a pin on a map, but it did not tell us that the site was surrounded by tall trees that blocked the sun for most of the day, turning our solar setup into expensive roof decorations.

We thought boondocking was camping without hookups. Park the rig, enjoy nature, same as always but quieter. What we did not understand was that your first time boondocking requires a completely different system than regular campground stays. At a campground, you plug in and forget about it. Out in the woods, every single thing you do draws from a finite supply, and when that supply runs out, you are done. No reset button. No calling the camp host to flip a breaker.

The gap between what we thought would “work” and what actually happened was the size of a canyon. We had brought our regular camping habits, our regular usage patterns, and our regular lack of planning into an environment that required none of those things. And we paid for it with a miserable, expensive, frustrating trip that we cut short by two full days.

The worst part was not that things went wrong. The worst part was realizing how easily we could have prevented all of it if we had spent even one night testing our setup before we left.

The Water Ran Out on Day Two (Here’s What We Learned the Hard Way)

It was about 3 PM on the second day when the water pump started making that horrible grinding sound that means the tank is empty. We were in the middle of washing lunch dishes, which we had done the same way we always did at campgrounds: running water, scrubbing, rinsing, repeat.

Our fresh water tank holds 60 gallons. That sounds like a lot until you realize that a normal shower uses about 2 gallons per minute, the toilet uses a gallon or more per flush, and washing dishes with the tap running burns through water faster than you think. We had taken two showers, flushed normally, washed dishes three times, and filled the dog’s bowl twice. By our math later, we had blown through nearly 50 gallons in a day and a half.

The real problem was not the consumption. It was that we had no idea what our baseline usage even was. We had never measured it, never tracked it, never thought about it. At a campground, you use what you want and the city water keeps flowing. Out here, once it is gone, it is gone.

We should have brought a portable water container as a backup. We should have filled the tank completely before we left instead of assuming “three-quarters full is probably fine.” And we absolutely should have switched to paper plates the second we arrived, which would have saved us at least 10 gallons over two days.

Instead, we spent the rest of the trip drinking bottled water and driving 40 minutes round-trip to a gas station to fill up a five-gallon jug we bought at a hardware store. It was not the end of the world, but it was completely avoidable.

Power Management Felt Simple Until It Wasn’t

The fridge died overnight on day two. We woke up to warm milk and a smell that told us the chicken we had planned for dinner was no longer safe to eat. The batteries had drained to the point where the fridge could not stay cold, and the solar panels had not generated nearly enough power the day before to make up for what we were using.

We thought we understood the system. Solar panels charge batteries. Batteries run the fridge and lights. As long as the sun is shining, everything stays topped off. Simple.

What we did not understand was that our batteries were old, our solar panels were being shaded by trees for most of the day, and our fridge was pulling way more power than we realized because we kept opening it to grab drinks in the heat. The math did not work. We were drawing more than we were generating, and the gap got wider every hour.

The fix, which we learned too late, was running the fridge on propane during the day instead of electric. Our rig has a three-way fridge that can run on shore power, battery, or propane. We had left it on auto, which defaulted to electric, which drained the batteries. If we had switched it to propane the moment we arrived, the batteries would have lasted the entire trip with power to spare.

We also learned that you cannot trust old batteries. Ours were shot. They would not hold a charge, and no amount of sunlight was going to fix that. We replaced them three weeks later with lithium batteries, and the difference was night and day. But on that first boondocking experience, we were trying to run a modern RV on batteries that belonged in a recycling bin.

Picking a First Time Boondocking Spot When You Have No Idea What You’re Doing

The spot we picked looked perfect in the app photo. Trees, shade, privacy, and a review from 2023 that said “great site, very quiet.” We drove two hours to get there, spent another two hours maneuvering the fifth wheel into position between the trees, leveled the rig, deployed the slides, and cracked a beer to celebrate.

Then we looked up.

Our solar panels, which we were counting on to keep the batteries charged, were basically useless. We got maybe two hours of direct sun in the late afternoon, and that was it. The rest of the day, we were in full shade.

If we had been set up for it, that would have been fine. But we were not. We did not have a generator with us because we thought the solar would handle everything. We did not have extra propane because we had not planned to run the fridge on gas. We did not have a backup power bank or any way to charge our phones except through the rig’s 12-volt system, which was draining faster than it was refilling.

We also did not have leveling blocks, which we discovered when we realized the site was not nearly as level as it looked. We ended up using random pieces of wood we found in the woods, which worked but felt ridiculous. The one question we should have asked before choosing that site was: does this location support the systems we are relying on? If your power comes from solar, you need sun. If your fridge runs on propane, you need enough propane. If your rig needs to be level to function properly, you need either a level site or the gear to make it level. We had none of that figured out, so we picked a site that looked pretty and learned the hard way that pretty does not keep your fridge cold. The Gear We Actually Use Now (And Why Everything Else Was Noise)

After that trip, we bought a lot of stuff. Most of it was useless. But three things have made every boondocking trip since then infinitely better, and we would not leave without them.

The first is a portable water container. We use a seven-gallon Aqua-Tainer that we fill before we leave and keep as a backup. It has saved us twice when we miscalculated usage, and it is cheap enough that not having one feels insane in hindsight. The second is a set of leveling blocks. We went with Lynx Levelers, and they have turned a 20-minute frustration session into a two-minute task. The third is Reflective insulation material for the windows. We cut pieces to fit our rig, and they give us privacy, keep the heat out during the day, and make the whole experience feel less like we are camping in a fishbowl.

Everything else we thought we needed, we did not. Fancy water filters, extra hoses, solar panel extension kits, all of it sat unused. The gear that matters is the gear that solves a problem you have actually experienced, not the gear that someone on a forum said you might need someday.

Before Your First Time Boondocking: The One Thing to Actually Do

Spend one night in your rig in your driveway with nothing plugged in. No shore power, no water hookup, no cheating. Use the fridge, take a shower, wash dishes, run the lights, and see what happens.

You will learn more in 24 hours than you will from reading a dozen articles. You will see how fast your water drains, how long your batteries last, and which systems you actually understand versus which ones you have been ignoring because they worked automatically at campgrounds. You will also figure out what you are missing before you are two hours into the woods with no way to fix it.

We did not do this before our first trip off-grid, and it cost us a trip we had been looking forward to for months. We do it now before every long off-grid stay, and we have not had a single disaster since. It is the least exciting advice we can give, but it is also the only advice that actually matters.
