We were eleven days into a remote BLM site outside Quartzsite when our black tank hit capacity. No dump station within twenty miles. No campground that would let us pull in to dump. What Actually Matters When You Are Choosing Between Portable RV Waste Tank Options (Spoiler: It Is Not What the Specs Say)
The first tank we bought was a 35-gallon model. We chose it because the specs said it held more than our black tank, which seemed logical. Bigger is better, right?
Wrong.
We got stuck at a dispersed site in Utah for sixteen days that spring. Our black tank is 40 gallons, and with two of us using it full-time, it fills in about five days if we are conservative. The 35-gallon portable tank should have given us another five days of capacity, which would get us to day ten before we needed to make a dump run.
Except the tank was never actually empty when we started filling it. There is always residual waste in the bottom after you dump. And the fill process is slow enough that by the time we finished transferring from the RV, we had already used the RV toilet twice more. So our “35-gallon extension” was really more like 30 gallons of usable capacity. We were making dump runs every eight days instead of every ten.
That taught us the first lesson: capacity is not about the number on the box. It is about how much extra time you actually get between dump runs. For us, a 42-gallon tank turned out to be the sweet spot. It gives us a legitimate six extra days, which means we can comfortably stay off-grid for two full weeks without moving the rig.
The second lesson came from wheels.
Every portable waste tank has wheels. They all look identical in the product photos. And they all claim to handle rough terrain. But six months into using our first tank, we were dragging it across a gravel lot in Nevada when one of the wheels locked up completely. The Two Tanks That Actually Survived Our Testing (And Why Everything Else Disappointed Us)
We bought our current tank in the spring of 2024 at a Camping World in Tucson. It is a Barker 42-gallon tote with pneumatic wheels and a rubberized hose connection. We have dragged it across half the country since then, dumped it at least sixty times, and it still works exactly like it did the day we bought it.

The wheels have not seized. The hose connection has not cracked. The handle has not snapped off. And the tank itself has not developed any stress cracks or leaks, even after we accidentally backed our truck into it in a Walmart parking lot in Wyoming.
That moment in Wyoming is actually why we trust this tank. We hit it hard enough to knock it over and drag it three feet across the pavement. We were sure we had destroyed a $200 piece of equipment. But when we picked it up and inspected it, there was a scuff mark on the side and absolutely nothing else wrong with it. We filled it that same day and it held every drop.

It is a 35-gallon model with solid plastic wheels instead of pneumatic tires, and it works fine if you are mostly dumping at paved RV parks. The hose connection is decent. The capacity is enough for a week of extended boondocking if you are conservative. And it costs about $60 less than the Barker.
The reason we switched was the wheels. They handled pavement fine, but the moment we took that tank onto gravel or dirt, it became a fight. The wheels would catch on rocks, jam up in ruts, and require us to lift the front end to get it moving again. If you are only ever dumping at campgrounds with paved dump stations, it is a solid budget option. If you are dumping at BLM sites or dispersed areas with rough terrain, spend the extra money on pneumatic tires.
The other five options we tested ranged from flimsy to overpriced, with wheels that seized after two months or hose connections that cracked in freezing temperatures. One of them developed a hairline crack in the tank itself after six dumps and started leaking gray water all over our truck bed. Skip them.
How We Actually Dump and Maintain the Tank During Two-Week Boondocking Runs
We were camped at a dispersed site outside Flagstaff last fall for fourteen days. Our routine by that point had become automatic.

Day five, the black tank hit about 75 percent. We could have pushed it to full, but we have learned that dumping at three-quarters keeps everything flowing better and reduces the chance of clogs. We pulled the RV sewer hose out of storage, connected it to the black tank valve, and ran the other end into the portable RV waste tank sitting about ten feet away. Opened the valve, let it drain, closed it back up.
The whole process took maybe ten minutes. Then we rinsed the hose, capped the tank, and went back to drinking coffee.
Day eight, we hitched the tank to the back of our truck using a cargo carrier we bought specifically for this purpose. Drove twelve miles to a dump station at a campground that charged five dollars for non-guests. Backed up to the dump hole, connected the tank’s built-in hose to the drain, and let gravity do the work. We also learned to check the hose connection before we leave the dump station. Our first few trips, we would get back to camp and discover the connection was loose or the cap was not fully tightened. Now we give everything a visual inspection and a tug test before we drive away.
Between trips, we store the tank empty and dry. We learned that lesson after leaving it with a few gallons of rinse water inside for three weeks in the Florida heat. The smell when we opened it was enough to make us gag. Now we dump it completely, rinse it one last time, leave the caps off for a day to let it air out, then store it with the caps loosely in place so air can circulate but bugs cannot get in. The Disasters We Caused (So You Do Not Have To)

It overflowed onto the ground and created a small disaster area that we had to clean up with a shovel and a bottle of bleach. What Size Portable RV Waste Tank You Actually Need (Based on Your RV, Not the Marketing)
If you have a Class A or a large fifth wheel with a 40-gallon or bigger black tank, get a 42-gallon portable. Anything smaller will not give you enough extra time to make it worth the hassle.
If you have a Class C or a smaller fifth wheel with a 30-gallon black tank, a 35-gallon portable waste tank is plenty. You will get a solid week of extra capacity, which is enough for most boondocking trips.
If you have a Class B or a camper van with a 20-gallon or smaller tank, even a 27-gallon tote will double your capacity. Go with the smallest option that has decent wheels, because you will be moving it more often and weight matters.
Before you buy, spend one week tracking how much gray water your rig actually produces. Fill your tanks from empty, use the RV normally, and see how many days it takes to hit three-quarters full. That number tells you exactly what size portable tank you need. If you fill your black tank in five days, a 35-gallon portable gives you another five days. If you fill it in three days, you need a bigger tank or you need to dump more often.
We bought our Barker 42-gallon tote in 2024 and it has extended every boondocking trip we have taken since. The pneumatic wheels have rolled across gravel, sand, and mud without a single failure. The hose connection has survived freezing temperatures and rough handling. And the tank itself has held up to impacts, UV exposure, and more dumps than we have bothered to count.
