The compressor gave up at 2 PM on a Tuesday in late June. We were parked at Furnace Creek, the outside temperature had hit 118 degrees, and our Dometic unit had been running nonstop since we arrived the night before. One minute we had lukewarm air trickling from the vents. The next minute, nothing but a clicking sound and the smell of hot electronics.

We thought we had been smart about it. We had run the AC all winter in Florida to keep the seals lubricated. We had replaced the foam gasket around the unit the previous fall. We figured that was enough.
It was not.
What we did not understand then — and what became painfully clear as we sat in 95-degree heat inside our fifth wheel waiting for a mobile RV tech who could not come until the next day — is that desert heat does not make your AC work harder. It actively destroys the components in ways that moderate climates never will. Proper RV AC maintenance in extreme conditions requires a completely different approach than what most owner’s manuals recommend. We learned through trial and error what actually works when you’re boondocking in extreme temperatures, and we wish someone had told us these things before our compressor died in Death Valley.
The refrigerant in an RV rooftop AC is designed to handle temperature differentials of maybe 30 or 40 degrees. When the outside air is 118 and you are asking the unit to produce 55-degree discharge air, you are pushing that refrigerant through a cycle it was never engineered for. The compressor runs constantly. The coils never get a break. And if there is even a tiny bit of dust or debris blocking airflow, the whole system starts cooking itself from the inside.
Our tech showed up the next morning and pulled the shroud off. The condenser coils looked like they had been dipped in caramel. Dust, pollen, and something that might have been cottonwood seeds had formed a mat so thick you could barely see the fins underneath. He said the unit had probably been starving for air for weeks, and the desert heat finished it off.
The compressor was shot. The refrigerant had leaked out through a crack in one of the lines that had fatigued from overheating. The whole top unit needed replacing, which cost us $1,100 in parts and labor, plus another two nights in a hotel in Pahrump while we waited for the replacement to arrive.
We have been following a strict RV AC maintenance schedule ever since. Not the kind where you spray the coils with a hose once a year and call it good. The kind where you understand what is actually happening inside that box on your roof and you address it before it turns into a $1,100 lesson in the middle of nowhere.
What Actually Lives in Your AC Unit (And Why It Matters in Heat)
Three things destroy RV air conditioners in hot climates, and none of them are what the owner’s manual talks about.
The first is the layer of crud that builds up on the condenser coils. We are not talking about a little dust. We are talking about a felted mat of pollen, road grime, cottonwood fluff, and whatever else gets sucked through the intake while you are driving 70 mph down I-10. That mat acts like a blanket. It traps heat against the coils, which means the refrigerant cannot shed the heat it picked up inside your rig, which means the compressor has to work twice as hard to move the same amount of cooling. In 110-degree heat, that extra work is the difference between a unit that cycles properly and one that runs itself to death.
The second is refrigerant degradation. The refrigerant does not sit there doing its job forever. It breaks down. It leaks through microscopic cracks in the lines. And when you are running the unit at full capacity for eight hours a day in the desert, those tiny leaks turn into performance problems fast. A unit that is even 10 percent low on refrigerant will freeze up, blow warm air, or quit entirely when the outside temperature climbs past 100.
The third is compressor overwork, which is what finally killed ours. RV rooftop units are designed to cycle on and off. They cool the space, the thermostat clicks off, the compressor rests, then it kicks back on when needed. But in extreme heat, especially if your rig is in full sun with no shade, the unit never cycles. It runs. And runs. And runs. The compressor is not built for that. It overheats, the oil breaks down, and eventually something inside gives up.
How We Actually Clean the Coils Without Breaking Anything
The first time we tried cleaning our AC coils, we grabbed a bottle of Coil Cleaner from the RV parts aisle at Camping World, climbed up on the roof, pulled the shroud, and sprayed the whole thing down. The foam turned brown immediately, which we took as a good sign. Then we hosed it off and put everything back together.


Two days later, the AC started blowing warm air. We climbed back up and discovered we had bent half the condenser fins with the hose nozzle. The water pressure had been too high, and we had aimed it straight at the coils instead of from an angle. The bent fins blocked airflow as badly as the dirt we had removed.
What we should have done — and what we do now every spring before heading west — is this. We pull the shroud and use a soft brush to knock off the big stuff first. An old paintbrush works. So does a parts-cleaning brush from the auto store. We brush gently, always in the direction of the fins, never across them. That gets rid of the cottonwood fluff and the chunks of leaves and whatever else has blown in there.
Then we spray the coils with Nu-Calgon Evap Foam No Rinse, which is the only coil cleaner we trust after trying four others that either did not work or left a residue that made things worse. The foam clings to the fins, breaks down the oily road grime, and drips out the bottom without needing a rinse. You let it sit for 10 minutes, then you are done. Keeping coils clean is one of the most effective ways to maintain efficiency and prevent system failure, and this approach has proven reliable for our RV AC maintenance routine.
The evaporator coils inside the unit are harder to reach, but they matter as much. We pull the return air filter and use a flashlight to check for dust buildup on the coils you can see through the intake. If they look dirty, we use a spray bottle with a 50-50 mix of water and white vinegar, mist them lightly, and let it drip into the drain pan. We do not soak them. We do not scrub them. We mist and let gravity do the work.
The whole process takes maybe 30 minutes. The result is a unit that pulls 20-degree temperature differentials instead of 15, cycles properly instead of running nonstop, and does not sound like it is about to explode when the outside temp hits 105. We have been cleaning our AC this way since 2019, and we have not had a single compressor failure since Death Valley.
Our Pre-Summer RV AC Maintenance Ritual (And Why We Do It in May, Not June)
We do our full RV AC maintenance the first week of May, before the snowbirds head north and before the mobile techs get booked solid with emergency calls from people whose units died in the first heat wave.


It starts with the condenser inspection. We pull the shroud, clean the coils like we described above, then check every visible refrigerant line for signs of wear. We are looking for spots where the insulation has cracked, places where the line rubs against the roof, anything that looks like it might turn into a leak when the system is under load. Last May we found a section of line near the compressor where the foam insulation had completely disintegrated. The line itself was fine, but we wrapped it with new foam pipe insulation from the hardware store before it became a problem.
Then we check the thermostat calibration. We tape a separate wireless thermometer to the wall next to the RV thermostat, let them both sit for an hour, and compare the readings. If they are off by more than two degrees, we adjust the thermostat or replace it. A thermostat that reads high will make your AC run longer than it needs to. One that reads low will leave you sweating and wondering why the unit keeps shutting off.
We replace the return air filter even if it looks clean, because a filter that looks fine in May will be clogged by July, and we would rather spend three bucks now than lose 20 percent of our airflow in the middle of Arizona. We also check the drain pan under the evaporator coils to make sure it is not clogged. A blocked drain will cause water to back up and drip into your ceiling.
The whole ritual takes maybe an hour and costs almost nothing. But it catches the small problems before they become expensive ones, and it means we are not scrambling to find a mobile tech in June when everyone else is doing the same thing.
When We Finally Called Someone (And What It Cost Us Not To)
We tried adding refrigerant ourselves once. This was in 2021, before we knew that RV rooftop AC units are sealed systems with no service ports. We had read online that some RV repair shops could install service ports and recharge the system, so we figured we could do it ourselves and save a few hundred bucks.
We bought a can of R-410A refrigerant, a set of gauges, and a valve kit from an HVAC supply store. We drilled a hole in the low-pressure line, installed the valve, connected the gauges, and started adding refrigerant. The unit ran colder for about two days. Then it started blowing warm air again, and when we checked the valve we had installed, it was leaking. The refrigerant we had added was gone, plus some of what had been in there originally.
We called a mobile tech. He charged us $400 to replace the entire top unit, because once you have drilled into the refrigerant lines and introduced a leak, there is no permanent fix. The system is sealed at the factory, and any modification you make to it will eventually fail. He said he sees it all the time — people trying to save money on a recharge and ending up with a $400 replacement instead.
There are exactly two things we will not touch on our AC unit anymore: anything involving refrigerant, and anything involving the compressor or electrical components inside the unit. Those require a licensed HVAC tech, and trying to DIY them is a good way to turn a $150 service call into a $1,100 replacement. Understanding your RV AC maintenance limits is as important as knowing what you can handle yourself.
Everything else — coil cleaning, filter replacement, drain pan maintenance, thermostat calibration, shroud inspection — we handle ourselves. The financial difference is huge. A mobile tech charges $150 an hour minimum, and a basic service call that includes coil cleaning and a system check will run you $300 to $400. We do the same work for the cost of a can of coil cleaner and an hour on the roof.
The One Thing Nobody Checks (And Why It Matters More Than the Coils)
We were parked outside Moab in 102-degree heat, both AC units running full blast, and the bedroom was still 85 degrees. The main living area was a comfortable 74. We could not figure it out. The bedroom unit was newer, the coils were clean, and the compressor sounded fine.

We finally pulled the ceiling vent cover in the bedroom and looked up into the duct. The tape sealing the duct to the vent had come completely loose. Cold air was pouring into the space above the ceiling instead of into the bedroom. We were cooling the attic.
We resealed every duct connection in the rig with aluminum HVAC tape — not duct tape, which falls apart in heat, but the real foil tape that HVAC contractors use. The bedroom dropped 10 degrees within an hour.
That loose duct connection taught us that airflow matters more than anything else. You can have the cleanest coils and the newest compressor, but if your cold air is leaking into the ceiling or your return air is pulling hot attic air instead of room air, your AC will never keep up in extreme heat. We have found that most RVs leave the factory with marginal duct sealing at best, and after a few years of road vibration and temperature swings, those connections come apart.
Now we check every duct connection, every vent seal, and every return air path before we head into desert country. It takes 20 minutes and a roll of foil tape. And it makes more difference to our cooling performance than anything else we do. This simple step has become a non-negotiable part of our RV AC maintenance checklist.
Before Your Next Hot-Climate Trip, Do This One Thing
If you only do one thing before your next trip into triple-digit heat, clean your condenser coils. Not with a hose. Not with the cheap spray from the RV store. Pull the shroud, brush off the debris, and hit the coils with a real no-rinse foam cleaner.
You will notice the difference immediately. The unit will cycle instead of running nonstop. The air coming out of the vents will be colder. And your electric draw will drop, which matters if you are running on a 30-amp connection and trying to keep the lights on at the same time.
We have watched our AC struggle to maintain 78 degrees in 100-degree heat with dirty coils, then drop to 72 degrees with clean ones. Same unit. Same rig. Same outside temperature. The only difference was 30 minutes on the roof with a brush and a can of foam.
