We’ve dealt with this exact problem more times than we care to admit. The good news is that most black screen issues have straightforward fixes you can handle yourself.

Loose connections are the most common culprit. We have found that corrosion on connectors is another frequent issue, especially if your RV sits outside or you travel in humid climates. Sometimes the camera and monitor aren’t speaking the same language because of compatibility issues or incorrect input settings.
Weather can also play a role. Extreme cold can cause temporary failures in electronic components.
Moisture getting into connections creates all sorts of havoc. And vibration from road travel gradually loosens connections over time.
7 Key Fixes for Black Screen Issues
Let’s get into the actual solutions. Start with the simplest fixes first before moving to more complex troubleshooting.

Check and Reseat All Cable Connections
Pull out every connector and plug it back in firmly. The connection at the camera, at the monitor, and any junction points in between. Connections work loose from vibration, and simply reseating them restores the video signal.
When you disconnect each cable, look at the pins or contacts inside. Are they corroded? Is there any green or white crusty buildup?

Verify the Correct Input Source is Selected
Many backup camera monitors have multiple input options. There’s usually a button labeled Source or Input on the monitor. Press it and cycle through the available inputs.
Your RV backup camera might be connected to Input 2, but the monitor is set to display Input 1. Yeah, we know this seems obvious, but it happens more than you’d think.
Test the Camera with a Different Monitor
If you have another screen available, connect your camera to it temporarily. This tells you whether the problem is with the camera or the monitor.
An RV backup camera system typically uses standard RCA video connections. If the camera works fine on a different screen, you know the monitor is the problem.
If it still shows a black screen, the issue is with the camera or the cable.

Clean the lens every time you wash your RV. Or at least monthly if you’re traveling regularly.
Secure all cables properly. Use zip ties or cable clips to prevent cables from hanging loose where they can snag or get damaged. Route cables away from hot exhaust components.
Check your system before long trips. Don’t wait until you’re backing into a tight campsite to discover your camera isn’t working. Test it in your driveway before you leave.
When to Replace vs Repair Your Backup Camera System
