The warm white LEDs we installed in our RV bunk beds are as bright as the old halogens, but the light itself is softer and less harsh. The difference in heat output alone was worth the upgrade—we measured the surface temperature of the old halogen fixtures at around 180 degrees Fahrenheit after thirty minutes of use, while the LED replacements barely reached 95 degrees even after running for several hours straight.

The Two LED Setups That Actually Worked for Our Family

We ended up using two different products depending on the bunk layout. For the overhead fixtures, we went with 12V LED puck lights with BA15S bayonet bases. We bought a ten-pack from an RV supply shop in Tampa for about $40, and they have been rock solid. The warm white 3000K color temperature is perfect for bedtime—bright enough to read by, but not so harsh that it keeps anyone awake. We have replaced exactly one bulb in the past year, and it took less time than finding the spare in the storage bin.

The specific model we chose puts out about 300 lumens per bulb, which turned out to be the sweet spot for reading without being overwhelming. We initially tested a 500-lumen version, but it was too bright for the confined space and created harsh shadows. The 300-lumen option provides plenty of light for reading, getting dressed, or finding things in the bunk storage compartments.

For the bunks with more space along the rails, we installed 12V LED tube lights with adhesive backing. These are about ten inches long, flat on the back, and stick directly to the wood or metal frame. We paid around $50 for a set of four, and they have been our favorite upgrade. The light is softer and more diffused than the puck lights, and the kids can control them with a little inline dimmer switch we added. One of them uses hers as a nightlight now, dialed down to the lowest setting.

We tried a few other options that did not make the cut. The Govee COB rope lights looked great in the photos, but they were too long for our bunk layout and the adhesive did not hold up in the Florida heat. We also tested a set of cheap LED strips from a big-box store, but they were 120V and required a converter, which added bulk and another potential failure point.

Another option we considered but ultimately rejected was the battery-powered LED puck lights with remote controls. While these seemed convenient because they required no wiring, we found that the batteries died quickly with regular use, and the kids would forget to turn them off. The hardwired 12V system we chose eliminates that problem entirely.

How Better Bunk Lights Changed Our RV Routine (And Our Kids’ Sleep)

Before the upgrade, bedtime was a negotiation. The overhead lights were too bright, so the kids would ask us to turn them off, but then they could not see to get ready for bed. We ended up using flashlights and phone screens, which made the whole process take twice as long and left everyone cranky.

The dimmer switches were a bigger deal than we expected. Our youngest uses hers as a nightlight, and our oldest dims hers down when she wants to read without bothering her sister in the bunk below. We have also found that the ability to control light levels helps with the transition from active evening time to sleep—the kids can gradually dim their lights as they wind down, which seems to help them fall asleep faster.

We also noticed that we are not recharging the house batteries as often when we are off-grid. The LEDs pull so little power that we barely notice them on the battery monitor anymore. During a recent week-long boondocking trip in Arizona, we were able to run the bunk lights for a combined total of about four hours per night without making a dent in our battery reserves, something that would have been impossible with the old halogen bulbs.

There was an unexpected benefit we did not anticipate: the cooler operating temperature of the LED lights meant the bunks themselves stayed cooler during summer camping. The old halogen fixtures generated enough heat that the bunk areas would be noticeably warmer than the rest of the RV. With the LEDs, the temperature is much more consistent throughout the rig, which has made summer camping significantly more comfortable for everyone.

Upgrade Your RV Bunk Beds This Season—Here’s Where to Start

If you are still dealing with hot, bright, power-hungry bunk lights, start by checking what voltage your system runs on. Most RVs use 12V DC for interior lights, but some older models mix in 120V fixtures. You can test this with a cheap multimeter from any hardware store. If you are not comfortable working with electrical systems, most RV service centers can do this upgrade in an hour or two.

Once you know your voltage, measure the space where your current fixtures sit. Puck lights work great for tight overhead spots. Tube lights work better along rails or in bunks with more room. And if your kids are old enough to care about controlling their own light, spend the extra ten bucks on inline dimmers. Make sure to measure not the visible fixture but also the depth of the mounting space—some RV bunk beds have very shallow ceiling cavities, and you need to make sure your new fixtures will fit without protruding too far.

Consider the color temperature carefully when choosing your LED RV bunk bed lights. We found that 3000K warm white was perfect for our family, but if your kids do homework or detailed activities in their bunks, you might want something closer to 4000K for better task lighting. Avoid anything above 5000K unless you specifically want that bright, daylight feel—in our experience, cooler color temperatures make it harder for kids to wind down at bedtime.
