Understanding Why Your RV Furnace Runs for 10 Seconds Then Shuts Off

This is probably the most frustrating problem RV owners face. Your furnace fires up, you hear the blower motor running, maybe you even feel a bit of warm air, and then it quits.

The cycle repeats over and over, but your RV never gets warm. So annoying.

The most common culprit when doing RV furnace troubleshooting is a dirty or failing sail switch. But other issues can cause this problem too.

A weak battery can’t provide enough power to keep the ignition system running right. The furnace might start on battery power, but as voltage drops during the ignition sequence, the control board shuts everything down.

Propane pressure problems also cause short cycling. If your propane tank is nearly empty or the regulator is failing, the furnace might light initially but can’t keep a steady flame. The system detects this and shuts down for safety reasons.

The Sail Switch: Your Furnace’s Key Safety Component

The sail switch is a small but essential part of your RV furnace. It’s basically a little paddle or flap that sits in the airflow path.

When the blower motor creates enough airflow, it pushes this paddle closed. This completes an electrical circuit.

This tells the control board that there’s enough airflow to safely ignite the propane.

Without proper airflow, your furnace could create a dangerous situation with incomplete combustion or carbon monoxide buildup. The sail switch prevents this by making sure the blower is working correctly before allowing ignition.

When troubleshooting an RV furnace, a faulty sail switch causes the exact symptoms we described. The furnace starts, the blower runs, but the sail switch either doesn’t close or doesn’t stay closed.

No signal to the control board means no sustained ignition. Pretty simple when you think about it.

You can test a sail switch with a digital multimeter. Remove the furnace cover and locate the switch. With the furnace off, the switch should show an open circuit.

When you manually push the sail closed, it should show continuity. If it doesn’t, the switch is bad and needs replacement.

Dirty sail switches cause problems too. Sometimes cleaning the switch with compressed air or contact cleaner solves the problem. But if the switch mechanism is worn or corroded, replacement is the only fix.

First, check your battery voltage. Your furnace needs 12-volt power to operate the control board, igniter, and blower motor.

Use a multimeter to verify you have at least 12.0 volts at the battery. If voltage is low, charge or replace the battery before continuing.

Next, verify you have propane. Check that your propane tanks have fuel, the tank valves are fully open, and you’ve switched to a full tank if needed. Try lighting a stove burner to confirm propane is flowing.

Check the thermostat settings. Make sure it’s set to heat mode and the temperature is set higher than the current RV temperature.

Verify the thermostat has power. Many use batteries that need periodic replacement.

Inspect the exterior furnace vents. Look for blockages in both the intake and exhaust openings. Remove any debris, nests, or obstructions.

Open the furnace access panel inside your RV. Look for obvious problems like disconnected wires, corrosion, or damage. Check that the furnace door switch is properly engaged.

Listen to the startup sequence. When the thermostat calls for heat, you should hear the blower motor start within a few seconds.

After the blower runs for 10 to 15 seconds, you should hear the igniter clicking and then the whoosh of propane igniting.

Common RV Furnace Problems and Solutions

The furnace won’t start at all. No blower, no clicking, nothing. This usually points to an electrical problem.

Suburban furnaces usually use a stronger construction with a steel heat exchanger. The control boards are usually mounted on the furnace body itself, making access relatively easy.

When you’re working on a Suburban furnace, pay special attention to the limit switch. Suburban furnaces use a high-limit switch that can trip if the furnace overheats. The switch needs to be manually reset on some models.

Atwood furnaces tend to be lighter weight and more compact. They often use aluminum heat exchangers and are designed for smaller RVs.

For Atwood furnaces, the ignition system is a common failure point. Atwood uses a direct spark ignition system that can be sensitive to electrode positioning and condition.

Both brands use sail switches, but they’re positioned differently. Suburban typically mounts the sail switch in the blower housing, while Atwood often places it in the air intake path.

Replacement parts between brands are not interchangeable. Always identify your furnace model number before ordering parts. Yeah, we know that seems obvious, but it’s easy to forget when you’re frustrated.

When to Call a Professional vs DIY Repairs

Some furnace repairs are straightforward enough for DIY work. Others really need a professional technician.

Knowing the difference saves you money when you can handle it yourself and prevents dangerous mistakes when you can’t.

You can safely handle basic maintenance tasks yourself. Cleaning filters, checking vents for blockages, testing battery voltage, and verifying propane flow are all within the scope of typical RV owner abilities.

Replacing a sail switch or limit switch is also manageable if you’re comfortable working with basic hand tools.

Thermostat replacement is usually a DIY job. Most RV thermostats use simple two-wire or four-wire connections that are clearly labeled. Take a photo before disconnecting anything.

But some jobs require professional expertise. Anything involving the gas valve or burner assembly should be left to trained technicians.

If you smell propane or suspect a gas leak, shut off the propane supply immediately and call a professional. Do not mess around with this stuff.

Control board diagnosis and replacement can be tricky when performing RV furnace troubleshooting tasks.

Boards are expensive, and you don’t want to replace one unnecessarily. Most of the time, you get what you pay for with diagnostic work.
