We woke up at 3 AM to the sound of our dog Maggie shivering in her bed. The furnace had stopped running. Outside our fifth wheel, the temperature had dropped to 22 degrees somewhere in the Arizona high desert, and we were four days from the nearest propane fill station. When we checked the gauge the next morning, both of our 30-pound tanks were bone dry. During our first week out there, daytime temperatures hit 70 degrees. We barely ran the heater. The fridge hummed along on propane, we cooked eggs and bacon every morning, and we took hot showers without thinking twice. By day seven, we checked the tanks and they still felt heavy. We assumed we were golden.
Then the weather changed. Nighttime temperatures dropped into the 20s, and we started running the furnace from about 8 PM until sunrise. That is when everything went sideways. In six days, we went from two mostly-full tanks to completely empty. The furnace had been burning through propane at a rate we never saw coming.

Obviously the furnace does not run nonstop. It cycles on and off based on the thermostat. But during a cold night in the desert—say, 20 degrees outside with 25 mph winds like we experienced in New Mexico one February—that furnace can run 40 minutes out of every hour trying to keep the rig at 65 degrees. Over a 10-hour night, that is close to seven hours of burn time. You used half a gallon of propane while you slept.
Multiply that over four or five cold nights, and you have burned through an entire 30-pound tank on heat alone. Add in the fridge, the water heater, and cooking, and you are looking at a week of propane max. If you are planning a 10-day boondocking trip in cold weather and you only have two 30-pound tanks, you are cutting it close. Real close.
We switched to 40-pound tanks after that Arizona trip. The extra 10 pounds per tank does not sound like much, but it gives us an extra three or four days of buffer when the temperatures drop. That buffer has saved us twice now.
How We Actually Track Our RV Propane Usage Without Fancy Gadgets
We do not use a propane usage calculator or any kind of app. We use a $12 luggage scale and a piece of paper taped to the inside of our storage bay door.

Before we leave for a boondocking trip, we weigh both propane tanks and write down the numbers. A full 30-pound tank weighs about 55 pounds total—30 pounds of propane plus 25 pounds of steel tank. If our tank weighs 50 pounds, we know we have about 25 pounds of propane left. We write the starting weight and the date on the paper.
Three days into the trip, we weigh the tanks again. Let us say one tank now weighs 45 pounds. That means we have used 5 pounds of propane in three days, or about 1.7 pounds per day. We write that number down. Now we know our burn rate for this trip, in these conditions, with these habits.
If we have 20 pounds of propane left between both tanks, and we are burning 1.7 pounds per day, we have about 12 days of propane remaining. If we are planning to stay out for two more weeks, we know we need to adjust something—either drive to a refill station, cut back on furnace use, or leave earlier than planned.
The key is weighing the tanks every few days, not at the start. Your burn rate changes depending on the weather. During our trip to the Gila National Forest last spring, we used half a pound per day for the first week when it was warm. Then a cold front moved through, and our burn rate jumped to two pounds per day overnight. If we had only weighed the tanks at the beginning, we would have run out again.
We also run one tank at a time instead of using both simultaneously. When the first tank runs dry, we know exactly how much propane we have left—one full tank. No guessing, no math. We switch the regulator over and make a note of the date. This method has kept us from running out in the middle of the night ever since Arizona.
Why Your Fridge and Water Heater Aren’t the Problem (But You Thought They Were)
Everyone told us the fridge would drain our tanks. It does not. Our RV refrigerator uses maybe a quarter pound of propane per day when running full-time on gas. Over a two-week trip, that is 3.5 pounds total. The water heater uses even less—maybe an eighth of a pound per day unless we are taking back-to-back showers.
We proved this to ourselves during a summer trip to Colorado when we never ran the furnace once. The third habit was learning to read the furnace like a fuel gauge. We started paying attention to how often it cycled on. Weigh your propane tanks right now and write down the number. Then weigh them again in three days. Calculate how much propane you used per day during those three days. That number is your real-world burn rate, and it is the only number that matters when you are planning a boondocking trip.

Do not trust the gauge. Do not trust the “one tank per week” rule you read online. Your RV furnace propane usage depends on the weather, your thermostat habits, how well your rig is insulated, and whether you are parked in the wind or tucked behind a hill. The only way to know your actual consumption is to measure it yourself under real conditions.
Once you know your burn rate, you can plan trips with confidence. You will know exactly how many days you can stay out before you need a refill. You will know whether you need to add a third tank or adjust your thermostat. And you will never wake up at 3 AM to a cold rig and an empty tank again.
