That One Blowout That Made Us Stop Guessing
We were somewhere between Amarillo and Albuquerque on I-40 when the rear driver’s side tire let go. It was July, the pavement was shimmering, and we were towing our fifth wheel at about 65 miles per hour when we heard what sounded like a shotgun blast followed by the unmistakable thump-thump-thump of shredded rubber hitting the wheel well. That blowout taught us everything we know now about proper tire maintenance, and it’s why we put together this RV tire pressure guide based on real miles and real mistakes.


The tire had been running at 78 PSI cold that morning. We thought that was fine. The sidewall said 110 PSI max, so 78 seemed conservative. What we did not know then was that 78 PSI was nowhere near enough for the weight we were carrying, and the tire had been flexing itself to death for the last three hundred miles.
By the time we limped off at the next exit, the tire was in pieces. The tread had separated completely, and we could see the cords underneath. A guy at the truck stop told us we were lucky the whole thing had not caught fire.
That blowout cost us a full day, four hundred dollars for a replacement tire we bought off a semi truck dealer, and a very long conversation about what we were doing wrong. Turns out, we had no idea how to set tire pressure correctly. We had been guessing based on what sounded reasonable, and reasonable nearly left us stranded in the Texas panhandle with a destroyed wheel well and a very rattled dog.
We have been full-time RVers since 2018, and that was the moment we stopped treating tire pressure like something we could eyeball. This comes from what we learned after that day, and from 38,000 miles of figuring out what actually works.
Why Your RV’s Tire Sidewall Is Lying to You

The maximum PSI rating on a tire is exactly that: the maximum. It is not a recommendation. It is not what you should run. It is the absolute ceiling before the tire manufacturer stops guaranteeing anything. Running your tires at max PSI will give you a ride that feels like you are towing a jackhammer, and it will wear the center of your tread down to nothing while the edges stay untouched.
We found this out the hard way on our first rig, a travel trailer with tires rated to 110 PSI. The manual said 95 PSI, so we ran them at 95. Every bump felt like we had hit a curb. Cabinets popped open. Maggie refused to stay in her bed. After six months, we looked at the tread and saw a bald strip straight down the middle of each tire.
The proper operating pressure for an RV tire is based on the actual weight the tire is carrying, not the maximum weight it could theoretically handle. That means you need to know what your rig weighs, and then you need to look at the tire manufacturer’s load chart to see what pressure supports that weight. If you skip that step and inflate to the number on the sidewall, you are doing it wrong.
How We Actually Check Our Tires Now (Without the Guesswork)
Before we hook up the truck for any trip longer than a weekend, we check every tire on the rig. Not with one of those cheap pencil gauges from the gas station, but with a digital tire pressure gauge that reads to the half-pound. We use a Viair RV400P air compressor with a sixty-foot coiled hose, which means we can reach every tire without moving the rig or crawling under the frame.

We check cold. That means first thing in the morning, before the sun has been on the tires for more than an hour, and definitely before we have driven anywhere. Tire pressure can jump twenty PSI once the tires heat up from driving, and if you set your pressure based on a warm tire, you are starting way too low. We learned that one summer in Nevada when we checked our tires at a rest stop after two hours on the highway and saw readings in the mid-90s. We thought something was wrong. Turns out that was normal. The tires had started at 68 PSI cold and climbed as they heated up.
We run our Goodyear Endurance tires at 65 PSI cold, which gives us a load capacity of about 2,540 pounds per tire. With four tires, that is over 10,000 pounds of capacity for a rig with a gross vehicle weight rating of 7,300 pounds. That is plenty of margin, and it gives us a ride that does not rattle our teeth loose.
The difference between 65 PSI and the 80 PSI the placard recommended was night and day. Drawers stopped flying open. The interior rivets stopped popping. Maggie actually stayed in her bed instead of pacing the floor every time we hit a bump. We have been running 65 PSI for three years now with zero tire wear issues and no blowouts.
What the RV Manual Actually Knows (And Why We Finally Read Ours)
We ignored our RV manual for the first two years we owned the rig. It sat in a drawer under the dinette, still in its plastic sleeve, while we made every rookie mistake in the book.
When we finally cracked it open after that blowout in Texas, we found a whole section on tire pressure that we had never bothered to read. It explained where the placard pressure came from, what the tire load ratings meant, and why the number on the door frame was based on the maximum loaded weight of the trailer, not the actual weight we were carrying.
The manual also had a table showing recommended pressures for different load conditions. If we had read that table before our first trip, we would have known that running 78 PSI on a tire carrying 2,200 pounds was asking for trouble. The load chart from Goodyear showed that 78 PSI was only good for about 2,100 pounds per tire, and we were right at the edge.
The manual had the answer all along. We were not looking. Now we keep a printed copy of the tire load chart taped to the inside of the storage compartment door, right next to the tire pressure gauge, so we never have to go digging for it. We also keep a copy of our RV maintenance checklist in the same spot so we never skip the important stuff before hitting the road.
The One Tool That Changed Everything
We have tried half a dozen tire pressure monitoring systems over the years, and most of them either gave us wildly inconsistent readings or died within six months. The one that actually works is a basic digital pressure gauge we picked up at a truck stop in Wyoming for thirty bucks.
It reads to the half-pound, it has a backlit screen so we can check tires before dawn, and it has survived four years of being tossed in a toolbox and dropped on asphalt more times than we can count. We check it against a known standard every few months, and it has never been off by more than a pound.
That gauge caught a slow leak in our front passenger tire last spring. The tire had dropped from 65 PSI to 58 PSI over the course of a week, and we never would have noticed without checking. We found a nail in the tread, patched it at a tire shop in Flagstaff, and avoided what could have been another roadside disaster.
Everything else we tried either broke or gave us readings that jumped five PSI every time we pulled the gauge off and put it back on. We are done experimenting.
Running Too Hot, Running Too Cold, and the TPMS That Cried Wolf
We installed a tire pressure monitoring system on our rig in 2019, and for the first six months it did nothing but scream at us. The alarm would go off thirty minutes into every drive, always on the rear tires, always when the pressure climbed from 65 PSI cold to somewhere in the mid-80s as the tires heated up.
We thought something was wrong. We pulled over. We checked the tires. They were fine. Hot, but fine. The TPMS was set to alarm at anything over 75 PSI, which meant it was treating normal tire heating as an emergency. We finally reset the high-pressure alarm to 20 percent above our cold pressure, and the low-pressure alarm to 10 percent below. The temperature alarm we set at 160 degrees Fahrenheit, because anything lower would trigger every time we drove through the desert.
That fixed the false alarms, but it also taught us that tire pressure is not a static number. It moves. A lot. For every ten degrees of internal temperature increase, the pressure can jump one to two PSI. On a hot day, driving on black asphalt in full sun, that adds up fast.
The flip side is running too low. We met a couple in a campground outside Moab who had blown both tires on a single-axle trailer. They had been running 50 PSI on tires rated for 65 PSI max, and the sidewalls had flexed so much under load that the tires overheated and failed within an hour of each other. The tires were not old. They were not damaged. They were under-inflated, and the constant flexing cooked them from the inside out.
Weighing Your Rig Is Not Optional
You cannot set proper tire pressure without knowing what your rig weighs. You cannot. Guessing will get you close at best and stranded at worst.
We weighed our rig for the first time at a CAT scale in Oklahoma, fully loaded for a three-week trip. It cost us fourteen dollars and took ten minutes. The scale gave us the weight on each axle, which we then used to calculate the load per tire. From there, we looked up the correct pressure on the Goodyear load chart and adjusted accordingly.
The weight surprised us. We thought we were running light, but we were actually within five hundred pounds of our gross vehicle weight rating. If we had kept running the tires at 80 PSI like the placard said, we would have been fine. But at 65 PSI, we needed to make sure we were not overloading the tires. The math checked out, but only because we actually did the math.
Under-inflated tires are one of the leading causes of tire failure on the road. Weighing your rig and setting pressure based on actual load is not paranoia. It is basic maintenance.
Four-corner weighing is even better, because it tells you the exact weight on each tire instead of the axle total. We have not done that yet, but it is on the list for this year. If one side of the rig is heavier than the other, you need to know.
Check Your Tires This Week—Here’s Why It Matters
Before your next trip, grab a pressure gauge and check every tire on your rig. Do it cold, first thing in the morning, and write down the numbers. Then look up the load chart for your tires and see if the pressure you are running actually matches the weight you are carrying.

If you have been guessing, or if you have been running the placard pressure without weighing your rig, there is a good chance you are either over-inflated or under-inflated. Both will cost you. Over-inflation gives you a brutal ride and uneven wear. Under-inflation gives you a blowout on I-40 in July with a hundred miles to the next town.
We still think about that day in Texas every time we check our tires. It was avoidable. We did not know what we were doing. Now we do, and we have not had a tire failure since. This is what we wish someone had told us in 2018, before we learned it the expensive way.
