7 Best RV Window Insulation Solutions That Block Heat

Why We Ignored Our Windows Until Phoenix Nearly Broke Us

We pulled into a Phoenix RV park in July 2024 thinking our air conditioner would handle it. The forecast said 112 degrees, but we had been through hot weather before. What we did not expect was waking up at 3 AM drenched in sweat with the AC running full blast and the thermostat reading 84 inside the rig. We quickly learned that proper RV window insulation was something we could not afford to ignore any longer.

The windows were the problem.

Our fifth wheel came with single-pane windows, which is standard on most RVs. We had never thought much about them. They opened, they closed, they let in light. But sitting in that Phoenix campground, we could hold our hand six inches from the glass and feel heat radiating off it like a stovetop. The curtains we had were doing absolutely nothing. By noon, the interior temperature hit 89 degrees despite the AC running nonstop for six hours.

That week cost us $180 in extra electricity from the metered pedestal. Maggie refused to move from the one tile floor spot that stayed remotely cool. And we spent most of our days hiding in the campground’s air-conditioned laundry room like a couple of heat refugees.

The real wake-up call came when we noticed condensation pooling on the window sills every morning. We were running the AC so hard to fight the heat gain that the cold air hitting the hot glass created a sweat problem. The moisture was starting to stain the wood trim. We realized we were not uncomfortable—we were damaging the rig.

We have been RVing since 2018, and somehow we had completely ignored the biggest thermal weak point in our setup. A single-pane RV window has an R-value under 3, which means it insulates about as well as a piece of cardboard. When you park in full sun, those windows turn into solar collectors, dumping heat into your living space faster than any air conditioner can remove it. According to the Department of Energy, windows are responsible for up to 30% of heating and cooling energy use, and that holds true for RVs like it does for houses.

After Phoenix, we decided to test every window insulation solution we could find. We wanted something that would block heat in summer, keep warmth in during winter, and not make the rig feel like a cave. We tested seven different products over the next year. Two of them are still on our windows. The other five are in a storage bin somewhere, and we will never use them again.

The Two Expensive Mistakes We Made First

We bought a set of custom quilted window covers from an RV show vendor for $340. They looked professional, fit perfectly, and turned our rig into a dark tomb. We could not see outside, could not tell if it was day or night, and felt claustrophobic within an hour. They worked for insulation, but we hated living with them.

Then we tried reflective film that promised to reject 90% of solar heat. We spent an afternoon applying it to every window with a squeegee and soapy water. It looked great for two weeks. Then the Arizona sun baked the adhesive, the film started peeling at the edges, and we spent another afternoon scraping sticky residue off the glass with a razor blade. The film came off. The residue did not.

Our Two Favorite RV Window Insulation Solutions That Actually Stuck Around

We have been using Reflectix on our bedroom and bathroom windows since that Phoenix trip, and it is still the best solution we have found for extreme heat. It is a roll of shiny bubble-wrap insulation that you cut to size and press into the window frame. No tape, no adhesive, a friction fit if you cut it about a quarter inch oversized.

The first time we installed it, we were skeptical. It looked like we had covered our windows with leftover HVAC duct wrap. But the temperature difference was immediate. We tested it on a 105-degree afternoon in Tucson by covering half the windows and leaving the other half bare. The side with Reflectix stayed noticeably cooler—we measured about a 10-degree difference on the glass surface itself. The bedroom, which faces west and gets hammered by afternoon sun, went from unbearable to tolerable.

Reflectix blocks 96% of radiant heat, which is exactly what you need when the sun is cooking your windows. The downside is you cannot see outside at all. It turns your windows into silver mirrors. We only use it on windows where we do not care about the view—bathroom, bedroom, and the small side windows in the kitchen. The main living area windows stay clear because we actually want to see where we are camped.

For those windows, we use plastic shrink film kits. These are the same kits people use on house windows in winter, and they work shockingly well in an RV. You apply double-sided tape around the window frame, press a sheet of clear plastic film over it, and then shrink it tight with a hair dryer. The film creates an air gap between itself and the glass, which acts like a second pane and brings the R-value up to around 6.

We installed these on our main living area windows in Colorado during a cold snap, and the difference was dramatic. The windows stopped sweating entirely because the inner film stayed warmer than the glass. We could put our hand on the film and feel that it was cool but not cold. The glass behind it was freezing. That air gap was doing exactly what it was supposed to do.

The film is nearly invisible once it is installed. You can see outside fine, which matters when you are parked somewhere with a view you actually want to enjoy. It stays up for months without peeling or sagging. We replace it twice a year—once before summer, once before winter—and a kit that covers four large windows costs about $15 at any hardware store.

We tested five other solutions that did not make the cut. Cellular shades fogged up with condensation and blocked the view. Reflective coatings peeled off in sheets. Thermal curtains were too thick to open and close easily, and they blocked all the light even when we wanted sun. Bubble wrap stuck to the windows worked okay but looked terrible and left residue. Rigid foam insulation cut to fit worked great but was a pain to store and reinstall every time we moved. Reflectix and shrink film are the only two that we actually kept using after the testing phase ended.

How We Actually Install These Without Calling Someone

We started with the driver’s side bedroom window on a Sunday afternoon in Quartzsite because it was the smallest window and we figured if we messed it up, it would not be too visible. For Reflectix, the process is dead simple. We measured the inside of the window frame—not the glass, but the frame itself—and added a quarter inch to each dimension. Then we unrolled the Reflectix on our picnic table, marked it with a Sharpie, and cut it with a utility knife.

The trick we learned after the first window was to cut it slightly oversized rather than slightly undersized. If it is too small, it falls out. If it is a little too big, you can compress it gently and press it into the frame, and it stays put from friction alone. No tape, no Velcro, no adhesive. You can pop it out in ten seconds if you want to see outside or if you are moving and need to pack it away.

For the shrink film, we did the main living area windows on a calm morning because wind makes the film impossible to handle. We cleaned the window frames with rubbing alcohol first, which we skipped on our first attempt and regretted. Any dust or grime will keep the tape from sticking. Then we applied the double-sided tape around the entire frame, pressed the film over it, and used a hair dryer on medium heat to shrink it tight.

The hair dryer step feels weird the first time you do it. The film looks wrinkled and loose, and you think you messed it up. But as soon as the heat hits it, the wrinkles disappear and the film goes drum-tight. It takes maybe two minutes per window. The whole rig took us about an hour and a half, including the time we spent untangling the extension cord.

If you have never done this before, budget two hours for a full-size fifth wheel or Class A. Thirty minutes for a small travel trailer. It is not hard work, tedious. And if you mess up a piece of film, you peel it off and start over. We have done it enough times now that we can knock out the whole rig in under an hour.

Summer Heat vs. Winter Cold—What Changes Your Strategy

The solution that saved us in Phoenix nearly suffocated us in Colorado. We left the Reflectix up on all the windows through our first cold-weather trip, thinking more insulation was always better. What we did not account for was sunlight. In winter, you actually want solar heat gain during the day. The sun coming through the windows warms the rig for free, and you need that warmth.

We were parked outside Durango in November, and the rig felt dark and cold all day even though the sun was shining. We finally pulled the Reflectix off the south-facing windows, and within an hour the interior temperature climbed six degrees from passive solar heating. We learned that Reflectix is a summer tool, not a winter one. It blocks heat in both directions, which is exactly what you do not want when it is 30 degrees outside.

For winter, we only use the shrink film now. It insulates without blocking light or solar heat gain. The air gap keeps the cold out, but the clear film still lets the sun warm the interior during the day. We keep Reflectix on the north-facing windows and the bathroom window where we do not get direct sun anyway, but everything else stays clear.

In summer, we do the opposite. Reflectix goes up on every window that faces the afternoon sun—west and south sides of the rig. The shrink film stays on the east and north windows where we get morning light but not the brutal afternoon heat. This seasonal switch makes a bigger difference than we expected. We went from running the AC 12 hours a day in Phoenix to maybe 6 hours a day in Tucson the following summer, from managing the windows better.

Before Your Next Trip, Do This One Thing

Test your current setup on a 90-degree day before you commit to a long summer trip. Park in full sun at noon, close all the vents and windows, and run your AC at your normal setting. Check the interior temperature every hour. If it climbs above 78 degrees, your windows are losing the fight.

Walk around and hold your hand near each window. If you can feel heat radiating off the glass from six inches away, that window needs insulation. We have been using an infrared thermometer to measure surface temperatures, which takes the guesswork out of finding problem windows. Pay attention to which windows get direct sun at what time of day. Those are the ones that need Reflectix. The ones in shade can probably get by with shrink film or even nothing at all.

We wish we had done this test before Phoenix. It would have saved us a miserable week, $180 in electricity, and a lot of frustration. Now we test every spring before we head anywhere hot, and we adjust our setup based on what we find. It takes an afternoon, and it tells you exactly what you need to fix before you are stuck sweating in a campground at 3 AM wondering why your AC bill is out of control.
