The good news is that tankless water heater cycling issues are usually fixable once you understand what’s causing them. Most problems come down to flow rate requirements, water pressure settings, or how you’re using the water in your rig.

We’ve troubleshooted tons of tankless water heater cycling problems in different RV setups. There are five main culprits that cause most issues.

1. Low Water Pressure From Your Fresh Tank or City Connection

Your RV’s water pump or city water connection might not be providing enough pressure to push water through the system at the required flow rate. Most tankless heaters need at least 20 PSI to work properly. But some RV water pumps struggle to maintain that pressure, especially when the fresh tank is getting low.

City water connections can be even more unpredictable. Some campground hookups have notoriously weak pressure. And if you’re using a pressure regulator set too low, you’re making the problem worse.

Setting your regulator to 40-45 PSI works well for most tankless systems.

2. Restrictive Fixtures and Low-Flow Showerheads

Those water-saving fixtures that seemed like a great idea for boondocking can actually cause your tankless heater to cycle constantly. A 1.2 GPM showerhead combined with a flow restrictor in your faucet aerator means you’re nowhere near the minimum activation flow rate.

Faucet aerators are sneaky culprits. They’re designed to reduce water usage by mixing air into the stream. But they also reduce the actual flow rate through your heater.

3. Partially Opened Faucets or Mixing Valve Issues

You turn on the hot water tap about halfway to get a comfortable temperature. You think you’re being smart about water usage. But that partial opening reduces flow through the tankless heater below its minimum requirement, causing it to shut off.

The Cold Water Sandwich Effect Explained

The cold water sandwich effect is a specific type of cycling problem that happens when you turn the hot water on and off repeatedly. You get hot water, then a burst of cold, then hot again.

Here’s what’s happening. When you turn off the hot water tap, the tankless heater shuts down immediately. But there’s still hot water sitting in the pipes between the heater and your faucet.

When you turn the tap back on within a minute or two, you first get that leftover hot water from the pipes. Behind that hot water is cold water that rushed in to fill the pipes after you shut off the tap. This cold water has to travel through the heater before it gets heated. Meanwhile, the heater takes a few seconds to detect the flow, ignite the burner, and bring the heat exchanger up to temperature.

The cold water sandwich is worse in RVs than in houses because the distances are shorter. In a house, you might have 30 feet of pipe holding leftover hot water. In an RV, you might only have 5 feet of pipe, so the cold water arrives much faster.

Proven Solutions to Stop Tankless Water Heater Cycling

Increase Your Water Flow Rate

The most direct solution is to use more water. Instead of running your shower at half-pressure, open it three-quarters of the way. Adjust the temperature using the heater’s controls rather than mixing at the fixture.

You can also remove flow restrictors from your showerhead and faucet aerators. Most fixtures have removable screens or plastic inserts that limit flow. Taking these out can increase your GPM by 50% or more.

Flow Rate Calculations: Does Your Usage Meet Minimum GPM Requirements

Let’s talk about actually measuring your flow rate. You don’t need fancy equipment, a bucket and a timer.

Turn on your shower or faucet to the typical position you’d use. Hold a one-gallon container under the stream and time how long it takes to fill. If it takes 90 seconds to fill one gallon, you’re getting 0.67 GPM. If it takes two minutes, you’re at 0.5 GPM.

Anything over three minutes means you’re below 0.4 GPM and almost certainly causing cycling issues.

Check your tankless heater’s manual for its specific minimum activation flow rate. Your measured flow needs to be at least 20% above this minimum to account for pressure fluctuations.

If you’re running multiple fixtures at the same time, you can add the flow rates together. A 0.4 GPM bathroom sink plus a 0.5 GPM kitchen faucet gives you 0.9 GPM total through the heater. That’s plenty to keep it running.

When to Adjust Your Water Pressure vs Replace Your Unit

Sometimes the problem isn’t fixable with adjustments. You need to consider whether your current tankless heater is the right fit for your RV setup.

If you’ve tried increasing pressure, removing flow restrictors, cleaning filters, and descaling, but you’re still getting cycling with normal single-fixture use, your heater’s minimum flow rate might be too high for your typical usage patterns. Look for a replacement unit with a lower activation flow rate.

Some newer models activate at 0.26 GPM. These work much better for RV applications. They’re specifically designed for low-flow situations and rarely have cycling problems.

If your heater works fine most of the time but cycles occasionally when pressure drops, adjusting your water system is the better approach. Upgrading your pump or adjusting your pressure regulator is cheaper and easier than replacing the entire heater.

Consider your typical camping style too. If you’re mostly in campgrounds with city water hookups, you can usually get enough pressure to make any tankless heater work. But if you boondock frequently and rely on your water pump, a low-activation-flow model is worth the investment.

Preventing Future Cycling Problems in Your RV Water System
