
RV tire safety is one of those topics nobody thinks about — until they are standing on the shoulder of a highway staring at shredded rubber. We know because that almost happened to us.
When we first started full-timing in our Catalina travel trailer back in 2018, tires were the last thing on our minds. They looked fine. They had air. What else was there to think about?
Turns out, a lot. And everything we have learned about RV tire safety since then is in this guide.

Why Tire Age Matters More Than Tread
This is the number one thing most RV owners get wrong, and it is the single most important RV tire safety lesson we have learned.
RV tires age out before they wear out.
That is worth saying again. Even if your tires have plenty of tread left, the rubber itself degrades over time. Heat, sun exposure, and the weight of your rig sitting in one spot all accelerate the breakdown. The compounds that keep the rubber flexible slowly evaporate, and the tire becomes brittle from the inside out.
Most tire manufacturers and the RV industry agree: replace your tires every 5 to 7 years, regardless of tread depth. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends regular tire inspections and notes that aging is a factor in tire failure even when tread looks adequate. We would not wait longer than 6 years on a travel trailer. The consequences of a blowout at highway speed are too severe.
When we bought our Catalina, the tires that came on it were already two years old. We had no idea that was even possible — we assumed new RV meant new tires. It does not. Tires sit in warehouses and on dealer lots, aging before they ever touch pavement.
How to Read the DOT Code on Your Tires
A critical part of RV tire safety is knowing exactly how old your tires are. Every tire manufactured after the year 2000 has a DOT identification number stamped on the sidewall. The last four digits tell you when the tire was made.
Go check yours right now. Seriously. Walk outside, get on one knee, and look at the sidewall. The DOT code is usually on the outer side of the tire, near the rim. If the last two digits show a year that is more than 5 years ago, start planning for replacements.
We check ours every season. It takes 30 seconds per tire, and it is the easiest pre-trip checklist item you will ever add.
Tire Pressure: The Most Important 2 Minutes of Your Morning
Proper tire inflation is not optional — it is the foundation of RV tire safety. And it is the thing most people skip because the tires "look fine."
Here is what happens when an RV tire is underinflated: the sidewalls flex more than they were designed to, generating heat. That heat builds up fast, especially on hot pavement. The internal structure weakens. And at highway speed, with thousands of pounds sitting on top? That is how blowouts happen.
We check tire pressure every single morning before we drive. Not when it looks low. Not once a week. Every morning.
A few things to keep in mind:
Check tires cold. Tire pressure rises as you drive because of heat. A "hot" reading can look normal when the tire is actually underinflated. Always check before your first mile of the day.
Use your tire's rated pressure, not the vehicle sticker. Travel trailer tires should typically be inflated to the maximum pressure listed on the tire sidewall. This is different from passenger vehicles, where you follow the door sticker. Consult your tire manufacturer's load and inflation chart for the specific PSI based on your actual axle weight.
Get a quality gauge. The cheap pencil-style gauges from gas stations are not accurate enough for RV tires. Invest in a digital gauge rated for the pressure range your tires require. Ours cost about $15 and has lasted years.
Do not forget the spare. A flat spare is worse than no spare at all, because you will not discover the problem until you are already on the side of the road needing it. Proper RV tire safety includes every tire on and under your rig.
UV Damage and Tire Storage
We learned about UV damage to RV tires in Florida, the hard way. Our Catalina sat in the same spot for about six weeks during a particularly hot stretch. When we finally looked at the tires, the sidewalls had visible cracking that was not there before.
Ultraviolet radiation from the sun breaks down the rubber compounds in your tires — the same compounds that keep them flexible and strong. Over time, this causes dry rot, which shows up as small cracks along the sidewall. Once dry rot sets in, the tire's structural integrity is compromised, and no amount of tread depth makes it safe.
Protecting your tires from UV is a key part of long-term RV tire safety. Here is what we do now:
Tire covers. We use them every time we park for more than a day or two. They block UV rays and reduce heat buildup. A set of four costs around $30 to $50, and they are one of the cheapest forms of insurance you can buy for your rig.
Park on solid surfaces. Sitting in dirt, mud, or grass traps moisture against the rubber, which accelerates degradation. Concrete or asphalt is ideal. If you are boondocking on dirt, consider putting plywood or pads under the tires for extended stays.
Move the rig periodically. If your RV sits in storage, drive it enough to rotate where the tire contacts the ground. This prevents flat spots and brings protective compounds to the surface of the rubber. Even rolling it forward a few feet every couple of weeks helps.

Blowout Prevention
A car tire blowout is scary. An RV tire blowout is dangerous. When a travel trailer tire lets go at 60 mph, the shredded rubber can rip apart wheel wells, damage brake lines, tear up wiring, and send the trailer into a sway that is incredibly difficult to control.
We have seen the aftermath at campgrounds — rigs with quarter-panel damage, destroyed fender skirts, and mangled axle components. All from a single tire failure. The repair bills run into the thousands.
Good RV tire safety practices come down to prevention. Everything in this guide — checking age, maintaining pressure, blocking UV, upgrading to quality tires — works together to dramatically reduce your blowout risk.
A few additional things we do:
Never exceed your tire's load rating. Every tire has a maximum weight it can safely carry at its rated pressure. If your travel trailer is loaded beyond the tire's capacity, you are rolling the dice every time you get on the highway. Weigh your rig fully loaded at a truck scale — you can find CAT scales at most truck stops for under $15.
Slow down on hot days. Pavement temperatures in the south can exceed 150°F in summer. That heat transfers directly into your tires. We reduce our highway speed by 5 to 10 mph on extremely hot days, especially on long drives. Less speed means less heat buildup.
Inspect before every trip. Walk around the rig. Look for bulges, cracks, embedded objects, or uneven wear. Run your hand along the tread — if you feel anything unusual, investigate before you drive. This takes two minutes and is part of our essential routine for every RV trip.
Why We Use a TPMS
A Tire Pressure Monitoring System changed the way we travel. Before we had one, our only tire awareness was the morning pressure check and a prayer that nothing happened between campgrounds.
A TPMS gives you real-time pressure and temperature readings for every tire — including the trailer — displayed right in the cab while you drive. If pressure drops suddenly or a tire starts running hot, you get an audible alert before the situation becomes a blowout.
For travel trailers specifically, a TPMS is essential for RV tire safety because you cannot feel what is happening back there. In a car, you might notice a soft tire through the steering wheel. Behind a tow vehicle, a trailer tire can lose 20 PSI before you have any idea something is wrong — and by then, it may be too late.
Our TPMS has alerted us twice to slow leaks that we would not have caught until the next morning check. Both times, we were able to pull over safely and address the issue before it became a roadside emergency.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
Monitors pressure and temperature on every tire in real time while you drive. The display sits on the dash, and sensors screw onto each valve stem. Alerts you immediately if pressure drops or temperature spikes. After our first close call, this became non-negotiable gear for us.
The Tire Upgrades We Made
After our tire scare, we did what we always do — researched everything for way too long and then upgraded. Here is what we landed on and why.
The tires that come standard on most travel trailers are budget ST (Special Trailer) tires. They meet minimum requirements, but "minimum" is not the standard we want between our rig and the pavement at highway speed. True RV tire safety starts with putting quality rubber on your rig.

Goodyear Endurance ST225/75R15
Purpose-built for travel trailers. The Durawall technology reinforces the sidewall — the most vulnerable part of a trailer tire — and they are rated to 2,830 lbs per tire at 80 PSI. These are widely considered the gold standard for trailer tires in the RV community. They are not cheap. But when we calculated what a blowout would cost in repairs (plus the safety risk), the price difference was easy to justify.
We paired these with our TPMS and tire covers, and the combination gives us a level of confidence we did not have in the early years. No upgrade we have made to the Catalina has given us more peace of mind than better tires and a monitoring system.
If you are running the original tires that came with your trailer and they are more than three years old, this is the upgrade to make first — before solar panels, before a new surge protector, before any of the fun stuff. Tires are the foundation of everything.
Pre-Trip Tire Checklist
Here is our exact RV tire safety routine that we follow before every drive. We have done this so many times it takes about five minutes total.
1. Visual walk-around. Look at every tire on the tow vehicle and trailer. Check for bulges, cracks, embedded nails or screws, and uneven wear patterns.
2. Check pressure cold. Use a quality digital gauge. Compare to the manufacturer's recommended PSI (usually on the tire sidewall for trailer tires). Adjust as needed.
3. Check the spare. Confirm it is properly inflated and the mounting hardware is tight.
4. Verify lug nut torque. Especially after new tires or wheel removal. Re-torque at 25, 50, and 100 miles after any tire service.
5. Power on the TPMS. Confirm all sensors are reading and that baseline pressures match your gauge readings.
6. Remove tire covers. Sounds obvious, but it has almost happened to us.

RV Tire Safety FAQ
How often should I replace my RV tires?
Every 5 to 7 years, regardless of tread depth. Rubber compounds degrade over time due to heat, UV exposure, and oxidation. Even tires that look new on the outside can be structurally compromised internally. Check the DOT code to confirm your tire's actual manufacture date — not the date you bought the RV.
What PSI should my travel trailer tires be?
For most ST (Special Trailer) tires, inflate to the maximum pressure listed on the tire sidewall. This differs from passenger vehicles. The sidewall pressure is the maximum safe inflation at the tire's maximum load rating. If you know your exact axle weights (from a truck scale), you can use the manufacturer's load and inflation tables to find the minimum safe pressure — then add 5 to 10 PSI as a margin. We always run our Goodyear Endurance tires at their rated 80 PSI.
Are ST tires or LT tires better for a travel trailer?
ST (Special Trailer) tires are designed specifically for trailer use — stiffer sidewalls to handle sway, higher load ratings for the size. LT (Light Truck) tires can work but are designed for different forces. For most travel trailers, quality ST tires like the Goodyear Endurance are the right choice. Can I use a regular car TPMS on my RV?
Most factory-installed car TPMS systems only monitor the tow vehicle's tires — not the trailer. You need an aftermarket TPMS with additional sensors for your trailer tires. The system we use supports both the tow vehicle and the trailer on a single display, which is what you want for complete RV tire safety monitoring.
What should I do if a tire blows out while driving?
Do not slam the brakes. Keep a firm grip on the wheel, gradually ease off the accelerator, and steer straight. Let the vehicle slow down naturally. Once you are at a safe speed, carefully guide the rig to the shoulder. Activate your hazards immediately. If the blowout is on the trailer, be prepared for potential sway — a trailer sway controller or weight distribution hitch helps in these situations. Once stopped, assess the damage before attempting any tire change. If you are not equipped to change a trailer tire safely on the roadside, call for roadside assistance.
Do tire covers really make a difference?
Yes. UV radiation is one of the top causes of premature tire aging. Tire covers block sunlight and significantly reduce heat buildup, which slows the degradation of rubber compounds. For the cost — usually $30 to $50 for a full set — they are one of the best RV tire safety investments you can make. We use ours anytime we expect to be parked for more than a couple of days.
How do I know if my RV is overloaded?
The only way to know for certain is to weigh your rig at a truck scale. Load it the way you normally travel — full water tanks, gear, food, clothes — and weigh each axle individually. Compare the axle weights to your tire's load rating (found on the sidewall). If any axle exceeds the combined tire ratings, you are overloaded and need to reduce weight or upgrade to higher-rated tires. CAT scales at truck stops cost under $15 and take a few minutes.
What is the most overlooked part of RV tire safety?
Tire age. Most people focus on tread depth, but RV tires fail from age-related rubber degradation far more often than from worn tread. The second most overlooked factor is the spare tire — it sits under the trailer in the sun, losing pressure and aging, and most people never check it until they need it. Make both of these part of your regular RV tire safety routine.

RV tire safety is not glamorous. Nobody posts about their tire pressure on Instagram. But it is the single most important maintenance item on your rig, and it is the one most likely to ruin a trip — or worse — if you neglect it.
Everything in this guide comes from our own experience. We went from completely ignoring our tires to making them the first thing we check every single morning. The upgrades to Goodyear Endurance tires and a TPMS were worth every dollar. And the peace of mind we get from knowing our rubber is in good shape? That is priceless.
