What Is Boondocking?

Boondocking is free, off-grid RV camping on public land — no campsite fees, no hookups, no neighbors 10 feet away. You park on BLM land, National Forests, or dispersed camping areas and run entirely on solar, batteries, and your own water supply.

It's the opposite of an RV park. The trade-off is self-sufficiency: you manage your own power, water, and waste. The payoff is waking up in a canyon, a mountain meadow, or a desert with no one else in sight — and paying nothing for the privilege.

Millions of RVers boondock every year, from weekend trips to full-time living. It's the core of what this site is about — though we cover the full picture of RV life too, from newbie questions to gear reviews to trip planning across the country.

The Basics

  • Park on public land — BLM, National Forests, Army Corps of Engineers sites
  • No utility hookups — power comes from solar, batteries, or a generator
  • Carry your own fresh water; use dump stations when you move
  • Most BLM stays are 14 days max at any one spot
  • Usually free — or a few dollars for a permit in some areas
  • Legal and encouraged — public land is yours to use
The #1 style of camping among full-time RVers. Once you try it, paid campgrounds feel like a downgrade.
Who We Are

Real RVers. No Filters.

We're full-time RVers who've spent years living off-grid, testing gear, and figuring out what actually works on the road. RV Boondocker started in 2018 as a way to share what we learned the hard way.

No sponsored content, no paid placements, no fluff. Every article is written from personal experience. Some links are affiliate links — if you buy something, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That never changes what we recommend. We only link to gear we've personally used and would buy again.
